Cancel health insurance Italy: a step-by-step guide after a death

<p>The health insurance of someone who has died in Italy must be cancelled formally to stop premiums and trigger refunds. This guide walks you through the procedure and provides a template. Does health insurance end automatically?

Health insurance in Italy is strictly personal and ends by operation of law on the date of death. However the insurer will not stop direct debits automatically – you must notify them in writing so that premiums stop and any refund is paid.

Documents required

Include the following with the cancellation:

  • Original or certified death certificate from the civil registry office of the Comune
  • Cancellation letter with the policy number
  • Bank details for refunds
  • Proof of heirship where required

How much premium is refunded?

Insurers prorate from the date of death. Where the monthly premium has already been debited, heirs receive the balance within 4-6 weeks. The same applies to supplementary, dental and overseas cover.

What about dependants?

Co-insured spouses and children must reorganise their cover. They may be entitled to survivor's or orphan's pensions with their own insurance obligation. Settle this within three months to avoid gaps.

Template letter

"I write to inform you that [Name, policy no.] passed away on [date]. Please close the contract on that date, stop direct debits and refund unused premiums to account [IBAN]. A death certificate is enclosed."

Outstanding bills and refunds

Medical bills incurred before the date of death continue to be reimbursed. Pending applications (rehabilitation, aids, long-term care) are processed – the money falls into the estate.

The Wegbegleiter App drafts the cancellation automatically and tracks the insurer's reply and the refund.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly must the insurer be informed?
Ideally within 24 hours – at the latest within one month, otherwise premiums remain due.
Who receives the refund?
The heirs jointly, paid into the estate account or another account they nominate.
Do supplementary policies need a separate cancellation?
Yes, every add-on (dental, optical, travel) needs its own letter.
What happens to long-term care entitlement?
Rights end on death; benefits already paid remain part of the estate.
Is there a funeral grant from the insurer?
Only in a few specific plans; most statutory funds no longer pay one.
