What to do after a death in France

French administrative deadlines are tight after a death. This guide lists the mandatory steps in order, with time limits and the right authorities to contact.

First hours: certificate and declaration

A doctor issues the certificat de décès. In hospital or care home, the institution handles it. Declaration to the mairie of the place of death must be made within 24 hours (excluding weekends and public holidays). Request 10 to 15 copies of the death certificate immediately.

Funeral: 6-day deadline

Burial or cremation must take place within 6 working days. Use a licensed funeral company and compare at least two detailed quotes (legally required). Check for an existing contrat obsèques.

Notary and succession

A notary is mandatory where there is real estate, a will, a marriage contract or an estate over €5,000. The succession declaration must be filed within 6 months (12 months if the death occurred abroad). The Wegbegleiter app (wegbegleiterapp.com) tracks every deadline.

Bank, employer, social security

Notify the bank (accounts are frozen), the employer or Pôle emploi, CPAM, CAF, the pension fund and the tax office. The Sécurité sociale usually pays a capital décès (€3,738 in 2024).
